Decimals represent numbers less than zero. Just like fractions, they represent a part of a whole number. We use decimals to show the value of money, the exact time of runners and so many other things. This year we will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.

You will be hearing me saying DOT, DOT, LINE, DOT a lot when we talk about adding and subtracting decimals. This simple phrase will help you remember to line up the decimals before adding or subtracting. This puts all the numbers in their proper places.

Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
To Multiply Decimals Just follow these steps:
We DON'T use dot, dot, line, dot when we multiply or divide.
Multiply without the decimal point, then re-insert it in the correct spot! Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal points. Then put the decimal point in the answer - it will have as many decimal places as the two original numbers combined. In other words, just count up how many numbers are after the decimal point in both numbers you are multiplying, then the answer should have that many numbers after its decimal point.
